Dream beaches

Zanzibar’s beaches are famous for their fine white sand and crystal-clear waters. Places such as Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje and Matemwe offer the perfect setting for swimming, walking or simply relaxing. Some beaches are quiet and unspoilt, ideal for unwinding, whilst others offer water sports for the more adventurous.

Lagoon and idyllic swimming spots

Zanzibar’s lagoons, such as those at Mnemba or Chwaka Bay, offer shallow, calm waters that are perfect for snorkelling, spotting tropical fish and exploring colourful coral reefs. Trips to the ephemeral sandbanks offer the chance to enjoy spectacular scenery, go paddleboarding, or simply immerse yourself in an idyllic setting far from the crowds.

Water activities and water sports

Snorkelling and diving

Snorkelling in Zanzibar is an unmissable experience. The sites around Mnemba, Tumbatu and Chumbe Island offer the chance to admire exceptional marine life, including corals, tropical fish and, on occasion, even turtles and dolphins. For those seeking a more thrilling experience, scuba diving offers a complete immersion in the underwater world and allows you to explore unspoilt ecosystems.

Boat trips

Boat trips offer the chance to explore secluded islands and lagoons. Trips on a traditional dhow or speedboat take you to sandbanks such as Nakupenda Bis, which are perfect for swimming and picnics. These sea-based activities also offer the chance to spot wild dolphins – a truly magical experience.

Kitesurf, stand-up paddle and jetski

Water sports enthusiasts will be in their element in Paje and Kiwengwa, thanks to the ideal conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Come and try stand-up paddleboarding, transparent kayaking or jet skiing at our office and kitesurfing school in Kiwengwa!

Paddleboarding also offers a unique way to explore the mangroves and lagoons in other parts of the island, combining adventure with relaxation.

Exploring nature and land-based excursions

Natural caves and underground pools

Zanzibar is home to a wealth of natural caves, such as Kuza Cave, Maalum Cave and Saalam Cave, which offer unique experiences for nature and adventure lovers. These sites combine exploration, swimming and cultural discoveries, all within an environmentally friendly setting.

Walks and wildlife

Walks through the forests and mangroves offer the chance to discover the local wildlife, including tropical birds, monkeys and endemic plants. These activities are perfect for travellers looking to combine exercise, nature and cultural immersion.

Culture, crafts and local attractions

Traditional markets and villages

Trips to fishing villages and local markets offer a glimpse into everyday life in Zanzibar. You can learn about traditional fishing methods, discover local spices, and take part in traditional cooking workshops.

Historic sites and cultural caves

Some caves and islets are linked to the island’s history and offer a chance to combine culture and nature. These cultural activities enrich your stay and add a unique dimension to your adventures.

Tips for making the most of your time in Zanzibar

  • Bring a swimsuit, sun cream, water shoes and snorkelling gear (even though these are provided, having your own is always more comfortable).
  • Please follow local rules: do not touch or feed the animals, and take care of the coral.
  • Book certain excursions in advance so that we can reserve them for you, particularly for protected islands and popular sites, to avoid the crowds and make the most of your experience.
  • Consider combining sea, land and culture to experience all facets of Zanzibar.

Zanzibar offers a wide range of activities: idyllic beaches, boat trips, snorkelling, diving, kitesurfing, hiking, cave exploration and cultural immersion.
