Stone Town

Duration: 2 to 3 hours
In Stone Town

Historical tour of the city

Between flavors, scents and history, the walking tour allows you to immerse yourself in the heart of the city and in Zanzibar culture: stroll through the narrow streets of sand and stone (some of which are over 200 years old), where many architectural inspirations blend together, as evidenced by these ancient residences adorned with carved wooden Arab or Indian doors. You’ll visit the town’s main market, where the island’s tropical fruits, vegetables, spices and fresh fish mingle on the stalls. You’ll also discover Christ’s Anglican Church built by Bishop Steers in 1873 on the site where slaves were once auctioned…

Other visits on the program:

  • House of Wonders, palace built in 1883 by the island’s sultan
  • Old Fort, built by the Portuguese and the island’s oldest building, also steeped in history
  • Forodhani Gardens, where you can potentially: enjoy the setting sun while savouring locally-prepared dishes such as Zanzibar’s famous pizzas and barbecued seafood.
